How to Multi-Mic

When our founder first started Audigo, he envisioned a future where creating great sounding content would be easy for anyone to do, and from anywhere. You would just set down some tiny wireless mics and do it all from your smartphone. We took a big step closer to realizing that vision this week with the release of multi-mic recording.

With our latest software update, Audigo can now support recording with up to four of our wireless smart microphones at the same time, all connected to the same iPhone. Sounds awesome, so how do I do it? Here’s some tips:

Overview

  • You can connect up to four Audigo smart mics directly to a single iPhone, then record with them all simultaneously

  • Our patented multi-sync technology ensures accuracy of your recordings

  • Each microphone captures a separate audio track into a single project that you can then mix and edit right in the app

  • A video captured with the app at the same time is automatically synced with the audio mix

Getting Started

  • Add mics by tapping the mic icon in the upper right corner of the app, then tap the “+” button in the upper right on the Mics status screen.

  • For the best performance, be sure to follow the steps for connecting your mics to your home Wi-Fi network. (You can access your Wi-Fi networks tapping the “gear” icon in the upper left and selecting “Manage Wi-Fi Networks”)

  • Name your mics by tapping the 3 dots to the far right of the mic listing and selecting “Rename” (Tip: For different recording sessions you can change the names of the mics as needed, ie: guitar, vocal, etc.)

  • You can identify a mic at any time by triggering the light to flash. Just tap the 3 dots to the far right of the mic listing and select “Identify”

  • If using a friend’s mic, put it in pairing mode to connect to your phone by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds until the blue light comes on

Mic Setup

  • Position the front of each mic as close as possible to the sound source that it’s recording

  • To avoid phasing (recorded sounds interfering with each other), follow the “3-to-1 Rule” when mics. It’s pretty simple… just make sure that the distance between each mic is at least three times as much as the distance between each mic and the sound source that it’s recording. So if you have 3 mics, 3 feet away from each other, make sure they are at most 1 ft away from their respective sound sources.

  • Consider using an additional mic further away from the sound sources to record the room for a more full sounding recording

  • Do a soundcheck for each mic prior to recording by tapping the Souncheck option. Adjust the level so it will stay in the green for the entire recording.

Mixing

  • Once you’ve made your recording, use unique two-character tags to identify the tracks before you start mixing. Just long-press the track numbers near the top of the Mix screen and select “Edit Track Name”.

  • If you have recorded multiple players or instruments, try setting them up in the mix left to right as they are placed in real life to increase separation for a more natural sound

  • Adjust the reverb, EQ and stereo width of each track individually (Tip: Don’t go overboard on stereo width to limit bleed)

Sharing/Exporting

  • You can share/export your projects from the Audigo app as audio or video files to social channels, your Photos app, or AirDrop to a computer

  • Use the Export Multitrack option to get a .zip file of each of the mixed tracks as individual .wav files plus the video as .mov, if there is one

Hope that helps to get you going as we work on additional resources like demo videos and tutorials. In the meantime, you can email us at info@audigolabs.com or reach out through our Instagram, Facebook or TikTok.

As always, thank you for your interest and support of Audigo.

Best,
