Recording Vocals

A great vocal performance can make or break a song. And recording vocals is an art that takes practice and preparation. Here are some tips for achieving great sounding vocals with Audigo.

1. Warm Up

Before recording, take some time to warm up. Finding a way to warm up without pushing too hard or over-exerting the voice prior to recording will help ensure that you’re ready for recording. A few examples of this may include singing your scales, humming, lip buzz warm up, jaw loosening exercises, or even deep breathing.

2. Pop Filters

A pop filter is a great tool for noise protection while recording. It can help to eliminate popping sounds caused by the mechanical impact of fast-moving air on the microphone from plosives (words with “p” sounds) during recorded speech and singing. Be sure to leave a few inches of space between the pop filter and the Audigo mic for the best results.

3. Clipping

Clipping happens when the gain on the microphone is turned up too high or when the mic is too close to a loud sound source. It is important to test the mic levels in Soundcheck mode with the vocalist’s voice prior to recording. Audigo’s microphone capsules are rated to handle most vocals without clipping when the gain is set appropriately

4. Multitrack Recording

Use multitrack recording to enhance your vocals. In the Audigo app, you can add multiple tracks to your recording for harmonies, doubles, and more. This is a great way to expand the sound of your recording and add a sense of depth to the song. Doubling your lead vocal can help to give it more presence. Sometimes vocals can get lost in the mix due to so many different sounds in a song. Doubling is a great option for counteracting this problem and bringing more fullness to the vocal. Harmonies can also help to add layers and give the song a sense of multi-dimensionality. Using these tools will result in a fuller sound and a more dynamic song overall.

5. Mixing and Effects

The Audigo app includes tools that can be used to adjust each track of a project individually as well as the mix of the combined tracks. You can adjust reverb, enhance your vocals with EQ, and even adjust the stereo width for each track. Generally vocals will sound best with little to no stereo width, but you can experiment to find what you prefer. The Audigo EQ includes easy to use presets, as well as a Custom setting for you to adjust the five different bands exactly as you like.
